2024 Top Cards on Twitter: 1-5

We’ve reached the top of the mountain.  Before we get to the last accounts, a reminder.  When a person finishes number 1 in three different years, they are moved to the Cards Twitter Hall of Fame.  Those accounts are still on the ballot and will be reflected in here where they fall, but they don’t count for ranking purposes.  Let’s do this!

Of all the athletes that have worn the Birds on the Bat and have had a Twitter account, Waino is the one that’s embraced it the best.  Even in his retirement, he’s been known to pop on and send off a tweet, whether it’s promoting a Big League Impact project or just being the optimistic guy that he is.  Some of his predictions this summer didn’t really pan out but you can’t blame him for having a little red in those glasses.  Hopefully he’ll stay active and bring us a lot of fun stories and great thoughts in the future.

I am not a Hall of Famer by any means, but traditionally I include myself on the ballot but not in the rankings.  Initially because so much of the traffic came from my sites or my accounts that I thought it was a bit unfair to count me, now because it just as stuck.  Anyway, with 1,132 points, I would slot in here if I was eligible.  I will take solace in the fact that my average score is higher than our next account, even if he bested me in the total.

When he’s not being put on blast by the head football coach of his alma mater, Brenden is an overflowing font of thoughts and takes about anything sporting, including the gambling side of the arena.  Don’t look for objectivity in the feed when it comes to Missouri–Brenden notably rides the ups and downs during a game–but a passionate fan is always an interesting thing to watch, especially if you don’t have any dog in the fight.  Brenden’s a good guy I like to poke fun at but he does great work in his jobs at KMOV and KTGR.

It was a tough year for Bernie in a couple of aspects.  He lost his regular radio job and his Twitter account got hacked so badly he had to create a new one.  However, in all of this, it seems to be that Bernie embraced the online community even more than he had before.  He’s got the regular YouTube show, putting out episodes usually more than once a day.  He’s interacted a lot with people both on Twitter and BlueSky.  He’s often joined–here these guys are again–the Dealin’ the Cards podcast.  Nothing kept Bernie down and it’s inspiring to see.  I’m looking forward to his Musial debut sometime soon!

Augie is the guardian of the Cardinal flame in our community.  There’s nothing like logging in and seeing his On This Day posts, replete with great photographs and wonderful tidbits.  You’ll get pictures throughout the day of players like Bob Gibson, Stan Musial, and of course Dizzy Dean.  He has scared us with health issues in the past and he makes noises about shutting things down, especially when he had to deal with people stealing his content, but if Augie goes the whole place will be a lot less bright.

Recognition of greatness may be delayed but it won’t be denied.  Derrick won the first one of these, then waited through cardinalsgifs’s reign (and a random other winner) before taking the top spot again.  He was primed to be the second member of our HOF until Katie Woo swooped in and went bang-bang-bang to get in.  Finally, it’s the legendary beat writer’s turn.  Derrick’s been the lead writer at the P-D for a long time now.  He’s covered great players.  He’s been the BBWAA president.  He’s on a path to Cooperstown.  His son has graduated and is making movies in the George Lucas building at USC.  Truly, though, this award is what is going to mean….OK, probably not much, but it’s something!

So what about those current Hall of Fame members?  Folks, we almost had a really surprising turn of events.  Hardly anyone ever gets close to cardinalsgifs, but this year he stayed on the top of the voting pile by just three points over katiejwoo, 1463-1460.  Katie even wound up with a higher average!  Just because they are already inducted doesn’t mean there can’t be a little competition, right?

We’ve reached the end of this project for 2024.  Like I say, we’ll see what 2025 holds.  Maybe 10 years a good way to mark the time.  Maybe we open it up to Top Cards on Social Media and include BlueSky.  We have no current winners so the field is wide open and I’d hate to leave it like that.  Ask me again next summer and I’ll see how I feel then.  Until then, congrats on your ranking (if you had one) and we’ll see you on one platform or another!
