In my first hour, I barely had time to find the restroom before finding myself thrust into the interview room with Stephen Piscotty. On a personal note, I mentioned him in a post last off-season, and saw him in a trip to Jupiter, for spring training last year. I was rather impressed with a number of players, not the least of whom were Piscotty and Xavier Scruggs. (I think Scruggs will be available later this afternoon)
It was kind of cool, being in that room–with all the media–the guys you’d recognize: Goold, Hummell, Calvin May, you know. All told, it’s really a simple process, and relatively quick. Not as quick as the shortened bytes that always end up playing on local news clips, and websites, but it really isn’t that much more involved. Imagine…
Stephen Piscotty in, 4 or 5 minutes of questions, Piscotty out.
Back to write for a moment, then we hear that Jason Heyward is ready for interviews.
Heyward in, 10 or 15 minutes of questions, Heyward out.
Back to write for a moment, then within just a moment or two, they said Ty Kelly (no “E”) was going to be ready in 20 seconds.
Kelly in, 5 or 6 minutes of questions, Kelly out.
Kelly’s interview session was a bit more memorable, at least for me, as he will always be the first ballplayer who I asked an interview question to, live and in-person. Hey, if you’re only going to get to do it for most of one day, better not take too long to “warm up” into the role.
Thanks for the update. Does Heyward seem genuinely happy to be in STL?
