Star Wars Night and a visit from St. Louis native, Nelly, highlight the eighth homestand of 2013

ST. LOUIS – August 5, 2013 – Following an eleven-game road trip against playoff-contending teams, the St. Louis Cardinals return to Busch Stadium for a 10-game homestand against the Los Angeles Dodgers, Chicago Cubs and Pittsburgh Pirates. Homestand Highlights include three theme nights – Nelly Night, Star Wars Night and Jewish Community Night at the Ballpark – as well as the Cardinal Wives grab bag charity fundraiser and an appearance from country music star Craig Campbell.

Monday, August 5, 2013 — Cardinals vs. Los Angeles Dodgers (6:05 p.m.)

  • Chicken Bratwurst Debut: New this homestand, DNC Sportservice, the concessionaire of the St. Louis Cardinals, is introducing a chicken bratwurst which is 40% less fat than the traditional ballpark brat. The new item will be available for the rest of the season at stands near section 152, 271, in the Redbird Club, and at the Bacon- Wrapped Hot Dog cart near Gate 1.
  • Redbird Rookies Parade: Prior to the game, members of Cardinals Care’s Redbird Rookies league will parade around the warning track. 2013 marks the 10th anniversary of the innovative Redbird Rookies program, a free baseball league for kids who otherwise might not have the opportunity to play. In addition to providing all the uniforms, gloves, bats, balls and other equipment needed for each team, Redbird Rookies also provides extensive off-field support in the areas of health, education, mentoring and the cultural arts for each of the nearly 4,500 kids who participate in the program each year.
  • MLBPAA Auction: The Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association will conduct a baseball-themed silent auction inside Gate 3, Gate 1, UMB Champions Club, and the Cardinals Club from the time gates open through the seventh inning. All proceeds will benefit Cardinals Care and the Players Alumni Association, a non-profit group that strives to preserve the game of baseball while supporting a variety of charities.

Tuesday, August 6, 2013 — Cardinals vs. Los Angeles Dodgers (7:15 p.m.)

  • Cardinals Care Stadium Auction: Fans have the unique opportunity to bid on exclusive autographed Cardinals memorabilia at the game. The auction is a great way for fans and collectors alike to obtain specialty Cardinals items while helping support the programs that Cardinals Care provides to youth in the community. The auction tables will be located at Gate 3, Gate 1, Cardinals Club, Champions Club, and in the Redbird Club. 
  • Nelly Theme Night: Join the Cardinals for a special tribute to American Grammy Award-winning, hip hop recording artist, entrepreneur and proud St. Louis-native, Nelly. As part of the theme night festivities, Nelly will throw out a ceremonial first pitch with children from the Make-A-Wish Foundation. All fans who purchase this special theme night ticket, available at cardinals.com/theme, will take home a one-of-a-kind Nelly bobblehead. The limited number of sold out VIP tickets also include a meet and greet with the St. Louis star. A portion of all ticket sales benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Wednesday, August 7, 2013 — Cardinals vs. Los Angeles Dodgers (7:15 p.m.)

  • Star Wars Theme Night at Busch: Busch Stadium will be transformed into a galaxy far, far away as the Cardinals host a Star Wars theme night at the ballpark. All fans who purchase this special theme night ticket, available at cardinals.com/theme, will take home an exclusive t-shirt featuring Fredbird and Darth Vader in a lightsaber battle. Fans can also purchase a VIP themed-ticket for the opportunity to attend a meet and greet with Ashley Eckstein, the voice of Ahsoka Tano from Cartoon Network’s series, Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Ashley will throw out a ceremonial first pitch to her husband, former Cardinals shortstop and 2006 World Series MVP, David Eckstein, prior to the game. Throughout the game, all fans will be able to take pictures with members of the 501st Legion, an international fan-based organization that dresses as costumed Star Wars characters.   • Ice Mountain Autograph Night: Fans, ages 20 and under, can get autographs from current players before the game from 6:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. From 6:30 p.m. to 7:15, all fans can get autographs from Cardinals alumni. New this year, the Ice Mountain Autograph Event will be held in Riverview Corner on the 400 level in right field.

Thursday, August 8, 2013 — Cardinals vs. Los Angeles Dodgers (7:15 p.m.)

  • Jewish Community Theme Night:  Fans who purchase the special theme night ticket will receive a one-of-a-kind Jewish Community Night Cardinals T-Shirt. Beginning at 5:45 p.m., all fans are invited to attend a pre-game concert in Ford Plaza by national Jewish-rock recording artist, and St. Louis native, Rick Recht. During the 7th inning stretch, Recht and the Jewish Community Night Choir will perform “Take Me Out to the Ballgame.”

Throughout the night, fans can also enjoy kosher snacks available for purchase at the new Kohn’s Food Cart outside section 147. The cart, which was introduced earlier this season, offers authentic kosher hot dogs, pastrami, and corned beef during all game days, except the Sabbath and Jewish holidays. Friday, August 9, 2013 — Cardinals vs. Chicago Cubs (7:15 p.m.)

  • Budweiser Bash Friday: Enjoy live music from dueling piano players, the Budweiser Build-a-Bar, and autographs in the Ford Plaza beginning at 5:45 p.m. The first 200 fans to line up at the Budweiser Bash entrance (Gate 5) will be given guaranteed autograph line tickets for Cardinals third base coach José Oquendo. Only fans with autograph tickets will receive an autograph. Autograph ticket distribution begins one hour prior to gates opening. Budweiser Bash Fridays are sponsored by Budweiser Beer. 
  • Cardinal Wives Baseball Grab Bags: The Cardinal Wives will be raising money to help homeless youth by selling grab bags of autographed baseballs during the game. For $50, fans can purchase an unlabeled brown paper bag containing one autographed baseball from a current Cardinal player and a card identifying the signature. The Wives will be stationed at various locations throughout the stadium including inside Gate 3, Cardinals Club, Redbird Cub and Ford Plaza. All proceeds benefit Covenant House Missouri (CHMO), a non-profit organization that empowers homeless, runaway and at-risk youth to live independently and become contributing members of our community. With open doors and open hearts, CHMO gives homeless teens hope and the opportunity to break the cycle of chronic homelessness and unemployment.
  • 2012 MLB Fan Cave Runner-up to Throw First Pitch: Cardinals fan and 2012 MLB Fan Cave finalist Kyle Thompson will throw out a first pitch prior to the game. Kyle represented the Cardinals last season at the MLB Fan Cave in New York, watching all 2,430 regular season games plus the Postseason while chronicling his experiences through videos, blogs and social media. Kyle survived all rounds of elimination, earning a trip to the World Series where he was named runner-up.

  • Carlos Beltran Scholarship Presentation: During a pre-game ceremony, Carlos and Jessica Beltran, in association with the Hispanic Arts Council of St. Louis, will be announcing the 8 winners of the Carlos Beltran Scholarship.  Four scholarships are need based (2.3 GPA or higher) and four are merit based (3.0 GPA or higher) with each scholarship being valued at $2,500. Each applicant had to fill out a formal application as well as submit a letter on why they felt they deserved the scholarship.

Tuesday, August 13, 2013 — Cardinals vs. Pittsburgh Pirates (7:15 p.m.)

  • Battle at Busch: Busch Stadium is proud to host the Battle at Busch in conjunction with Mozingo Music and 105.7 The Point. The 2013 schedule features 15 local bands over the course of five nights, at five different Cardinals’ home games out in Ford Plaza. Tonight’s battle features Man Eating Tiger and ChillaxX. Bands begin performing 20 minutes after the gates open with each act given 20 minutes to perform. Each band will be judged on a point system by Mozingo Music and 105.7 The Point. The top three scoring bands of the summer will be invited back to play on September 24th in the “Battle at Busch” finals for the grand prize package. Wednesday, August 14, 2013 — Cardinals vs. Pittsburgh Pirates (7:15 p.m.)

  • Varsity Club Day at the Ballpark: Prior to the game, members of the Cardinals Varsity Club receive early access to the ballpark for a brief program featuring Cardinals Front Office executives, Rawlings representatives and Cardinals players, and a parade around the warning track.   • The Voice of “God Bless America”: U.S. Air force Staff Sergeant Angie Johnson will sing “God Bless America” at today’s game. Johnson was discovered on YouTube with her military band Sidewinder and rose to fame when she was a contestant on Season 2 of NBC’s The Voice.

Thursday, August 15, 2013 — Cardinals vs. Pittsburgh Pirates (12:45 p.m.)

  • Craig Campbell Sings “God Bless America”: Country music star Craig Campbell will perform “God Bless America” prior to the game.
  • Charity Haircuts in the Plaza sponsored by Great Clips: During the game, fans can root on their team and shape up their roots with a visit to Ford Plaza for Great Clips’ Charity Haircuts. For a $10 donation, Great Clips – who sponsors the event every weekday afternoon game during the season – will cut your hair and donate all proceeds to Cardinals Care.

Cardinals Work “4 A Greener Game”

The Green Team is a group of volunteers who walk down the aisles of the seating bowl in-between innings collecting recyclables from fans and promoting recycling at Busch Stadium. In exchange for their services, volunteers are able to watch the game in standing room only sections of Busch Stadium, as collections are only done in-between innings and during pitching changes so as not to disturb fans trying to watch the game. Cardinals in the Community

Cardinals Care was established to give fans a way of teaming up with Cardinals players and the Cardinals organization to help children in our community – both on and off the baseball field. Since it was established in 1997, Cardinals Care has invested nearly $19 million in helping children, including providing nearly $11 million in grants to over 800 non-profit youth organizations, and building 20 youth ball fields in neighborhoods in both Missouri and Illinois. 

Cardinals Care’s Redbird Rookies program, a free league for boys and girls who otherwise might not have the opportunity to play baseball, is celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2013. In addition to providing all the uniforms, gloves, bats, balls, and other equipment needed for each team in over 20 leagues in Missouri and Illinois, Redbird Rookies also provides extensive off-field support in the areas of health, education, mentoring, and the cultural arts for each of the nearly 4,500 kids who participate in the program each year.

  • Cardinals Care 6K and One Mile Fun Run: Registration ends Sunday, August 11th for the fourth annual Cardinals Care 6K and One Mile Fun Run set for Sunday, August 18th. Those interested in participating are encouraged to learn more and register at cardinals.com/6k.

  • Dynamic Deals of the Week: The Cardinals’ value-based dynamic pricing system allows them to offer outstanding ticket savings to fans throughout the season. Special values will be highlighted each Monday as part of the “Dynamic Deals of the Week” promotion. Since the launch of dynamic pricing last season, 77% of games were priced lower in 2012 than 2011, with nearly 40% of games having tickets priced for $5 or less. Fans can sign up to receive weekly Dynamic Deal emails at cardinals.com.
  • KMOX 1120 First Pitch Tickets: The Cardinals are pleased to team up with KMOX 1120 to offer the KMOX 1120 First Pitch Tickets. At 9 a.m. on the day of each game, fans may purchase a voucher good for two tickets to that day’s game for a total cost of $11.20 ($5.60 per ticket). The voucher may be redeemed for tickets 15 minutes before the scheduled start of the game. The tickets may be anywhere in the park, depending on availability.
