State College and Johnson City roll as the rest lose – 6/20 Farm Report

Well we are almost at full strength as the Gulf Coast Cards are the only American affiliate who has not yet started play and they start on Friday. I have not really covered GCL games much in the past but will this year with so many highly drafted players headed there. The Baby Birds went 2-4 with the two lowest clubs providing the only wins. Maikel Cleto and Victor Marte struggled again in Memphis’ walk-off loss. I am with you all in your frustration as to why they are still employed by the Cardinals. I will say this, the only negative I can find to keeping them is that Cleto is taking a starting spot from someone who deserves it like Richard Castillo of Springfield.

Starlin Rodriguez was demoted to High-A Palm Beach from Springfield on Thursday in an effort to move him to the outfield, I believe the emergence of Jacob Wilson and Breyvic Valera at second base allowed this move to happen. Palm Beach also features some of the hottest hitters in the Cardinals system with the likes of Stephen Piscotty, Colin Walsh, and David Popkins all on a roll.

Corey Jones had another solid outing for Peoria, only allowing 2 runs on 2 solo home runs. Third straight quality start by Jones. It is still really early, but the State College lineup is really producing and Ben O’Shea, a 2012 draftee, was solid on the mound for the Spikes. Johnson City kicked off its season with a bang. Brett Wiley, our Baby Bird of the Night, hit his first home run of the year and added 4 RBI’s. Big time International signee, Alexander Reyes -18, had a decent debut for Johnson City. Kenny Peoples-Walls could be a sleeper to watch out for.
