The Heroes of Diamonds

I mentioned as a throwaway at the end of this morning’s post that I was going to “rewrite The Hero of Canton”.  I wasn’t really planning to do that, but unfortunately a couple of lines came to me quickly, which meant that it wouldn’t leave me alone until I got it done.

If you are not familiar with Firefly, exactly what have you been doing with your life?  Fix that quickly–the entire series is $20 at Amazon and is streaming on both Amazon Instant and Netflix.  The quick recap is that it’s a space western, but that doesn’t do it justice.  Anyway, in the episode “Jaynestown” we find out that one of our heroes, in a previous visit to a planet, inadvertently became a hero and is immortalized in a statue and a song.

Jaynestown

“You wanna tell me how come there’s a statue of you here lookin’ at me like I owe him somethin’?”

If you want the lyrics to the real song, here you go.  You can also listen to the original and try to fit these words into it if you like.  Hopefully you can enjoy.  If not, you can go to the crappy blog where you’re a hero!

Matt
The men we call Matt……

Knockin’ base hits and they come ‘round to score
Give us all they have then they give us some more
Our love for them grows when they’re up to bat
The heroes of diamonds, the men we call Matt

Now Matt saw the Cardinals team shakin’
They saw the Cardinals lament
And they saw that Pirates team takin’
A title for which they weren’t meant

So they said, “You can’t do that to our people,
That just doesn’t have any appeal.”
Matt grabbed up their bat
And in five seconds flat
Brought the Reds and the Pirates to heel

Knockin’ base hits and they come ‘round to score
Give us all they have then they give us some more
Our love for them grows when they’re up to bat
The heroes of diamonds, the men we call Matt

Now here’s what separates players
From common folk like you and I
The men they call Matt
Saw pitches so fat
And let those baseballs hit sky
They dropped them into the bleachers
They dropped them all ‘round the yard
And the men they call Matt
Woke up this team so flat
And headed them for October hard

Knockin’ base hits and they come ‘round to score
Give us all they have then they give us some more
Our love for them grows when they’re up to bat
The heroes of diamonds, the men we call Matt
