Last night’s news about John Gast was less than promising, and it puts more of the spotlight on Tyler Lyons, Nick Additon, and Tim Cooney. The trio of lefties may soon be joined by another in discussions going forward as Hector Hernandez continues to impress. The Palm Beach southpaw improved to 3-0 in Florida State League action and could move up as a starter to Springfield with a strong finish.
One pitcher who appears will not be making a 2013 Texas League appearance is Marco Gonzales, the Cardinals’ first round pick in June. He did make another start for the GCL Cards, but Gonzales will offer yet another option next season as a lefty rotation arm. I originally thought St. Louis may look to use the Michael Wacha model with Gonzales, and he may still get bumped up to the FSL next month.

Gast and Chris Carpenter are all but certain to be counted out for the 2014 campaign, and the pitching roster is littered with quite a few more question marks. With the trade deadline less than a week away, the rumors are only going to be flying faster even if neither side shows their hand. One thing is for certain, however, and that is a number of lefties will have an opportunity to become household names very soon.
