WADDELL OPTIONED TO MEMPHIS (AAA), PLACED ON COVID I.L.
ST. LOUIS, MO., July 16, 2021 – The St. Louis Cardinals announced today that they have selected the contract of veteran left-handed reliever T.J. McFarland from Memphis (AAA) and optioned lefty Brandon Waddell to Memphis.
To make room for McFarland on the team’s 40-player Major League roster, Waddell has been placed on the COVID Injured List at Memphis.
McFarland, 32, was signed by the Cardinals to a minor league contract on July 1 following his release by Rochester, the Triple-A affiliate for Washington, and was assigned to Memphis.
In four games for Memphis, McFarland was 1-0 with a 2.57 ERA (7.0 IP/2 ER) and one save. He is a combined 2-2 with a 4.65 ERA in 22 games this season between Memphis and Rochester, striking out 34 in 31.0 innings pitched, with seven walks.
The 6-3, 200-pound McFarland, a native of Palos Park, Ill., has complied a career mark of 20-14 and a 4.08 ERA in 285 games (3 starts) with Baltimore (2013-16), Arizona (2017-19) and Oakland (2020).
McFarland is the fifth pitcher to have been added to the Cardinals pitching staff over the past month, joining Wade LeBlanc, Justin Miller, Luis García and Waddell.
McFarland has been assigned uniform no. 62.
