Fifth-rounder Darren Seferina and eighth-rounder Nick Thompson head to State College of the New York-Penn League
ST. LOUIS, MO (June 10, 2014) – The St. Louis Cardinals signed eight members of their 2014 MLB Draft Class, including two of their first 10 picks: fifth-round selection, second baseman Darren Seferina (SEF-er-ee-nah) and eighth round pick, outfielder Nick Thompson.
Joining Seferina and Thompson are left-handed pitcher Jordan DeLorenzo (12th round), right-handed pitcher Matt Pearce (13thround), second baseman Casey Turgeon (24th round), right-handed pitcher Landon Beck (25th round), right-handed pitcher Tyler Dunnington (28th round) and a local prospect from St. Louis, left-handed pitcher Sasha Kuebel (COO-buhl) (38th round).
Seferina, 20, a left-handed batting infielder out of Miami-Dade Community College South will report to State College in the New York-Penn League.
“Darren is a burner on the base paths and possesses tremendous barrel accuracy with his bat,” said Cardinals Director of ScoutingDan Kantrovitz. “We are looking forward to him being a catalyst in the State College lineup and getting his career going soon.”
Thompson, 21, will join Seferina and report to State College. Thompson led NCAA Division I in runs scored (69), batting a team-leading .368 with 11 home runs and 37 RBI, adding to 42 walks contributing to a .479 on base percentage while at the College of William & Mary.
“Nick had one of the most impressive offensive seasons of any college player this year,” said Kantrovitz. “He controls the strike zone very well and has game power to all fields.”
DeLorenzo, Pearce, Turgeon and Beck will each report to Johnson City, the Cardinals rookie league affiliate in the Appalachian League. Dunnington and Kuebel will report to the Cardinals rookie league Gulf Coast League entry in Jupiter, Fla.
State College begins their season on Friday, June 13, with Johnson City following on June 19 and the GCL Cardinals on June 20.
