Grichuk and Perry Earn Cardinals Minor League Honors For May

Grichuk blasts 7 home runs at Memphis (AAA); Perry averages over 2 strikeouts per inning in Peoria (A)

ST. LOUIS, MO (June 3, 2014– The St. Louis Cardinals announced their Minor League Player and Pitcher of the Month for May by honoring outfielder Randal Grichuk at Memphis (AAA) and right-handed relief pitcher Chris Perry at Peoria (A) for their accomplishments on the field.

Grichuk, 22, a former first-round pick by the Los Angeles Angels in 2009 who was acquired in a trade this past November, batted .321 (26-81) with six doubles, seven home runs and 15 RBI during the month while posting a 1.029 on-base plus slugging percentage.  The Rosenberg, Texas, native ranked tied for 7th among Triple-A players with the seven home runs for the month and ranked 7th with the 1.029 OBP, despite missing the first eight games of May while in St. Louis with the Major League club.  Grichuk hit home runs in three consecutive games from May 13-16, including his 7th career multi-home run game vs. Omaha on May 14th.  He has crushed Triple-A left-handed pitchers this season at a .451 clip (23-51, 6 HR).

“Randal is coming off a very productive month in Memphis,” said Cardinals Director of Player Development Gary LaRocque.  “He’s hitting for average and power, earning him a promotion to St. Louis.”

Perry, 23, the Cardinals 17th round (540th overall) selection out of Methodist University in Fayetteville, N.C., in the 2012 first-year player draft, was 2-0 with an 0.46 ERA over 10 relief appearances at Peoria.  The Cary, N.C., native struck out 40 batters over 19.2 innings averaging 18.31 strikeouts/9 innings pitched.  His 40 strikeouts were the most of any pitcher in Minor League Baseball who did not make a start, and tied for 8th overall in May.  Perry threw over 2.0 innings in three of his relief appearances including a career-high nine strikeouts over 4.1 innings of relief versus Clinton on May 19th.  The last reliever to earn the honors was current St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Kevin Siegrist in May 2013.

“Chris was impressive in May, working ahead of hitters and putting together low walks with excellent strike out numbers,” said LaRocque.
