Exit Interview 2018: Edmundo Sosa

Every year since 2012, we’ve spent some time after the season looking back at those that wore the Birds on the Bat.  Whether it’s a bit player that got into just a couple of games or someone that played almost every day, we’ll look at their stats, their positives, their negatives, and grade them based on what we would have expected from them.  The stat line is from their time in St. Louis, though splits and other numbers may include time with other teams, if applicable.  Think of this as like the players packing up their locker and then seeing Mike Shildt before they head off for the winter.  Once again, our great header work comes to us from cardinalsgifs, who continues to be a master.

Player: Edmundo Sosa

Season stats: 3 G, 3 PA, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 K, .000/.333/.000, 3 OPS+, 0.0 bWAR

Hero/Goat: None

Overall grade: C

Positives: Made his major league debut during the last home series against the Giants….walked and scored a run in his debut….only played the field in one game but had an assist and was part of a double play….started the year at Springfield but then was bumped up to Memphis….hit .270 between the two minor league teams….hit .314 with five home runs in AAA games away from AutoZone Park….hit .274 in the second half at Memphis….hit .299 in the seventh spot at AAA.

Negatives: His major league debut only came because Kolten Wong was hurting and there were no other middle infielders on the 40-man roster….was only used as a late inning replacement, never entering the game before the eighth inning….hit .198 with no homers at home in AAA….hit .214 in eight Memphis day games….hit .245 against lefties at AAA, though he had a higher OPS against them than righties….hit .176 leading off innings for the Redbirds.

Overview: Really tough to have much thought about Sosa’s year.  I mean, it’s always great to see a person make their major league debut, but it was so unheralded I didn’t actually know it had happened until he’d appeared in a game.  It would have been nice if he’d been able to make a bit more of an impact or at least that we could have gotten a better look at him.  Still, moving up to Memphis is a feather in his cap and that put him right on the doorstep when Wong was hobbled.  He’d worked to get into that position and while he doesn’t appear to be anything overwhelming, that doesn’t mean there can’t be a spot for him in the bigs.

Outlook: There are enough middle infielders ahead of him, even with the departure of Greg Garcia, that it would be really shocking if Sosa started the year with the Cardinals in 2019.  He’ll return to Memphis but if he continues to develop the way he has so far, he probably would get a longer look at the majors if an injury cropped up.  Otherwise, he’ll probably spend the year at Memphis and get a September callup next year.
