Cardinals Announce Roster Moves

LYONS & G. GARCIA OPTIONED TO MEMPHIS (AAA), TWO OTHERS RE-ASSIGNED TO MINORS

JUPITER, Fla., March 17, 2015 – The St. Louis Cardinals announced today that they have optioned left-handed pitcher  Tyler Lyons and infielder Greg Garcia to the Memphis Redbirds (AAA) roster and re-assigned non-roster catcher Carson Kelly  to the Palm Beach (A) roster and non-roster infielder Breyvic Valera to the Memphis (AAA) roster.

Today’s moves put the number of players on the team’s 40-man roster at 36 and the team now has 48 players remaining in Major League camp.

well, with Valera at AAA and one of Dean/Kozma/T.Kelly going down (assuming Kozma doesn’t get DFA’d and plucked) that probably means Greg Garcia’s days are numbered

Possible. Anna hasn’t looked well so I could see them just releasing him, but Kelly has done enough that I think they’ll want to keep him in the system. Garcia does have the cache of being their own, but we saw last year that he didn’t necessarily get treated like he was any sort of prize, so they may well let him go eventually.

yeah, I hope they don’t release Anna over a few spring games, his defensive versatility would be terrific, but yeah they don’t seem to care much for Garcia

Help me understand why the 40-man roster has gone down. Won’t players taken off the 40-man have to pass through waivers?

I’ll admit, I don’t get that either. They would have to be put on waivers if they were being taken off the 40-man. My feeling is that wasn’t written correctly and the 40-man stood at 36 even before the moves, because options and reassignments shouldn’t affect that roster.
