Exit Interview: Shane Robinson

Last year, I spent the time immediately after the season examining each player that had made an appearance in St. Louis during the season.  This series was well received and so I’m bringing this idea back for the 2013 offseason.  More summaries than anything, I imagine the player coming into Mike Matheny‘s office and having a short conference before heading home for the winter.  Stats are just the ones accumulated for the Cardinals during the regular season.

This year’s Exit Interview series is brought to you by Bonfyre.  A large number of the United Cardinal Bloggers used Bonfyre all season long and found it a great way to interact and discuss things in a limited audience.  No need to worry about some pseudo-fan crashing your Facebook conversation or trying to explain fine points in 140 characters on Twitter. Invite who you want to the group and get to talking.  Share pictures as well–Bonfyre is a great way to document parties or other events, especially for folks that can’t be there.  Sign up today and give it a try.

Player: Shane Robinson

Season stats: 99 games, 171 PA, 22 R, 2 2B, 1 3B, 2 HR, 16 RBI, 23 BB, 17 K, .250/.345/.319

Hero/Goat: Hero 2, Goat 5

Overall grade: B

Positives: Not much was expected out of Robinson this season, but he grew into a very capable fourth outfielder and worked his way into a virtual center field platoon with Jon Jay.  His average increased in the second half, though both of his home runs came before the break.  He was more effective off the bench, posting a .757 OPS as a substitute.  He was defensively solid as well, able to play all of the outfield positions.  He shone in October, with a .313 average and a big home run against the Dodgers in Game 4.

Negatives: Robinson had a reverse split, doing much better against right-handers than he did lefties, which made his filling in for Jay less effective than you’d expect.  He has limited power and would likely be exposed if he had a full-time role with a club.

Outlook: Robinson should be a bench option for the 2014 Cardinals and a good one at that.  If he could figure out how to hit lefties, he’s probably get even more opportunities, though if Oscar Taveras takes the center-field job, Robinson will likely see his playing time decrease and be more spread out over the various outfield spots.
