Down on the Farm: Last Chance Games Edition

This is it for three of the four affiliates as they look to try to clinch some playoff spots. Unfortunately, none were successful other than State College, who clinched a while back and will continue another week. September call-ups are most likely coming soon, so we’ll be on the lookout for that (cause the big club could certainly use another spark…).

Memphis Redbirds (AAA): Lost 2-1 to OKC

For the second straight day, Memphis had a great chance to clinch a playoff spot, no matter what Omaha did. However, this was also the second straight day in which the bullpen ended up ruining the day (and the season, if you wish). Brock Peterson led the Redbirds with two hits and Greg Garcia plated the lone Redbird run. Eric Fornataro pitched well enough to earn a win and a playoff spot, only giving up one run in 6.1 innings. Deryk Hooker pitched a scoreless 1.2 innings, but it was the recent call-up Lee Stoppelman who gave up the go-ahead run and took the loss. Omaha beat Round Rock 8-4 to clinch the playoff spot. Kudos on a great season, Memphis!

Springfield Cardinals (AA): Lost 8-4 to Tulsa

No playoff implications in this game, but a chance to end the season with a win nonetheless. More offense here than in Memphis, with Xavier Scruggs hitting two home runs and three RBI, and Adam Melker added two doubles. Stephen Piscotty also hit safely twice and scored a run. Zach Petrick started and went five innings, giving up two runs. It was Zach Russell who couldn’t keep the Cardinals in the game as the Drillers drilled five runsin Russell’s inning of work. Russell would take the loss. The Cardinals are also done for the year.

Peoria Chiefs (A): Lost 5-4 to Kane County

The top of the lineup accounted for most of the offensive production today, with Breyvic Valera, Nick Martini, and Jordan Walton combined for six of the ten Peoria hits and three of the four RBI and runs scored. Martini even added a home run. Starter Silfredo Garcia gave up three runs (1 ER) in five innings, and Brady Adamek pitched well in relief, striking out five in three innings and only allowing one run. After the Chiefs scored two runs to tie the game in the top of the ninth inning, reliever Dixon Llorens only recorded one out before KC got three hits and a walk-off to end the Chiefs’ season.

State College Spikes (A): Won 6-4 over Jamestown

HOORAY! State College breaks the funk of writing for all these losses lately. It took 11 innings, but the Spikes plated two in the top half of the inning to stun the Jammers. Jimmy Bosco led the way with three hits, a double and two RBI. David Washington also knocked in a run and scored one as well. Arturo Reyes started and gave up only two through six innings. Jhonny Polanco went two scoreless for the hold, but Jeff Rauh blew the save to head to extras. Mitch Harris eventually earned the win and Jacob Booden came through for the save. The Spikes still have two more games against the Jammers.

So not exactly another great day for the minor league affiliates or Adam Wainwright for that matter. Most of these teams are done for the year, but State College is still fighting the good fight so we’ll keep this going with a “Spikes Watch” as they go through the NY-Penn playoffs. As always, PREACH ON, my friends!
