Final Push Seedlings

No one may ever know if any of the names on this list were close to being dealt, but John Mozeliak probably could have left a voice recording specifying what it would take to land any of the top 5-6. In the end, however, the Cardinals made the smart move long-term by holding on to their valuable commodity. It is doubtful that St. Louis repeats as the best system in baseball, but that won’t stop the impressive graduation rate for the years to come.

Number. 1

Oscar Taveras, Memphis OF

Repeating in the top spot, Taveras only has one goal for the rest of 2013 — come back healthy.

Number. 2

Kolten Wong, Memphis 2B

Wong has made it more difficult for the Cards in looking to the future, just what you want the September call-up to do.

Number. 3

Carson Kelly, State College 3B

With clear sailing up the ranks, the teenager was a very nice pick last year. Kelly gets back to Peoria next April.

Number. 4

Tyrell Jenkins, Palm Beach RHP

Jenkins may have been the name used in potential deals had he not landed on the DL. Looks to return this season.

Number. 5

Charlie Tilson, Peoria OF

A potential star in the making, Tilson possesses the skill set to make a leap next season.

Number. 6

Anthony Garcia, Palm Beach OF

Biggest jump for the 2nd helping of Seedlings, Garcia and Tilson form a dynamic pair going forward.

Number. 7

Jordan Swagerty, Palm Beach RHP

Control is the last thing to get back after Tommy John surgery, and Swagerty is learning that the hard way.

Number. 8

Alexander Reyes, Johnson City RHP

Look for Reyes to join the Peoria rotation next April, where he will be turning heads from day one.

Number. 9

Cody Stanley, Springfield C

Stanley has little depth ahead of him and needs a full season at Memphis in 2014 to move up the rankings.

Number. 10

Robert Stock, Palm Beach RHP

Stock made the leap up in competition, and he has battled to win a place in future discussions.

Number. 11

Tim Cooney, Springfield LHP

Cooney should be joining the lone newcomer on the list for top spot in the 2014 Springfield rotation.

Number. 12

Deryk Hooker, Memphis RHP

Took over control as closer in Springfield and now looks to earn a roster spot with strong finish.

Number. 13

Zach Petrick, Springfield RHP

Control artist is more than a feel-good story. Petrick will factor into next season’s big league club.

Number. 14

Patrick Wisdom, Peoria 3B

Wisdom has the biggest tool needed, power, to stick at third and must play his game on the way up.

Number. 15

Mike O’Neill, Memphis OF

Injuries factored into O’Neill getting his call-up, but it is well deserved. Look for him to be in the September discussion.
