Jake Westbrook makes a rehab start – 6/4/13 Farm Report

John Nagel writes as the Prospect Preacher and is the owner of CardinalsFarm.com where he covers the Cardinals minor league system on a daily basis.

With Peoria off, the Baby Birds went 1-2 as Memphis was the only winner. Jake Westbrook made his first rehab start and he said after the game that he felt good. Westbrook went 3 and 2/3 innings and allowed 6 hits, 1 run, and struck out 5. Westbrook said his next appearance will be on Sunday with the Peoria Chiefs and if all things go well he will be ready to return to St. Louis. The other big news was another big night from Anthony Garcia of the Palm Beach Cardinals. Garcia has probably been the most struggling top prospect this year and is showing signs of a turn around. Garcia has 2 home runs in his last 2 games and a total of 6 hits in those games. A couple of other struggling Palm Beach Cardinals had nice nights, Stephen Piscotty and Colin Walsh.

Boone Whiting had another solid start for Memphis. I am debating if this guy is a serious prospect or not. Whiting has nice K rates throughout his career and also a low walk rate. Whiting doesn’t have overpowering stuff but is getting the job done. I think I am going to leave him out of my next top 20 prospect list – which will appear here on Friday – for now.

Memphis (31-27) 2, Omaha 1

The Memphis Redbirds only had 5 hits on the day but were victorious 2-1. Jamie Romak hit his team-tying 11th home run in the 4th inning, a solo shot. The eventual game winner was in the 6th when Brock Peterson singled home Ryan Jackson who doubled. Jermaine Curtis added a single and Chris Swauger a double as the remaining Memphis’ hits.

Boone Whiting started and was solid for 5 innings allowing 1 run on 3 hits while issuing 3 walks and striking out 5. Whiting’s pitch count got the best of him as he was at 95 after 5 innings. Jorge Rondon pitched 2 scoreless innings in relief of Whiting only allowing 2 hits while striking out 2. Michael Blazek picked up his first Triple-A save with 2 perfect innings and striking out 2.

Arkansas 4, Springfield (28-26) 2

The Springfield Cardinals only managed 4 hits on Tuesday night against the Arkansas Travelers. Catcher Audry Perez had 2 hits and a RBI. James Ramsey hit his second Double-A home run, third total, in the 9th. Jake Lemmerman had a double and a run scored. That was it for the Springfield offense.

Jake Westbrook made the rehab start and allowed 1 run on 6 hits over 3 and 2/3 innings while striking out 5. Seth Blair took his 6th loss while allowing 2 earned runs on 6 hits over 3 innings. Justin Wright pitched 2/3 of a scoreless inning and Jose Almarante a scoreless inning and 2/3.

Palm Beach (21-35) 4,Tampa 5

Palm Beach lost in 11 innings, but there were a lot of positive signs. Colin Walsh was in the lead-off spot and went 3-for-6 with 2 runs scored and 2 doubles. Stephen Piscotty also had a strong night going 3-for-5 with a run scored and 2 RBI’s. Anthony Garcia follows up his big night with another big night. Garcia went 3-for-5 with a double, HR, and 2 RBI. Garcia is 6-for-9 with 2 HR, 2 2B, 1 3B, 4 RBI in his last 2 games. Matt Williams added 2 hits and a walk as well.

Kurt Heyer made his second High-A start and allowed 4 runs on 6 hits and 2 walks over 3 innings. Iden Nazario and Travis Miller fallowed Heyer with 2 scoreless innings each. Zach Petrick continues to dominate, throwing 3 scoreless innings allowing 1 hit and striking out 2. Ronnie Shaban took the walk-off loss by allowing a run on 2 hits in 1/3 of an inning.
