St. Louis Cardinals: Walk-Up Song Tournament

With no baseball, or sports in general, we’ve had to get creative to stay entertained. With March Madness also cancelled, many folk have taken to creating tournament brackets for, well…pretty much everything — from cereal, to Star Wars characters, to Taylor Swift songs.

So now I’m getting in on the act, combining my two greatest interest — Cardinals baseball and music.

And so I give you The St. Louis Cardinals Walk-Up Song Tournament (#WalkUpSTL)

The last day or so I dug into my own memories, did several scattershot Google searches, and crowd-sourced Twitter to come up with as many songs — and the Cardinals players that have used them — as possible. Big shout out to @TheSnortingBull on Twitter who was able to provide a lot from the 1996-2006 range.

All-in-all, I ended up with 68 entrants, perfect for a 64 team bracket with 4 play-in matchups.

Most of the entrants are walk-up songs used by hitters (or starting pitchers). Some hitters have multiple songs. One song — Welcome to the Jungle — has multiple hitters. A handful are the entrance music used by various relievers.

For seeding:

I looked up the WAR that all players on the listed posted as a Cardinal, and then ranked them 1-68.

Then, I looked up the Billboard chart info for all the songs on the list — typically the Hot 100, or the next most relevant chart — and ranked them 1-68 based on their peak chart ranking. Some that didn’t chart at all ended up in the “bubble team” category and are in the Play-In round.

After ranking both, I simply took an average of the two for each player/song combo and then put them in order based on that composite rank.

It was not very scientific, but it got the more popular songs and the more prominent players in the higher seeds, and randomized the matchups.

So let’s get on with it then!

I will be conducting polls for the matchups on Twitter and Facebook and then combining the results. Seek out myself (@hes_verygood) on Twitter, The Redbird Daily on Facebook, or simply search #WalkUpSTL on either to find the polls.

When voting, don’t necessarily pick the song you like better, consider if it is a good walk-up song — does it pump up the crowd and the hitter? Does it impose the pitcher? Does it fit the hitters vibe? Those sorts of things. Or just vote however you want, it’s all for fun.

This post will be updated with full round results and updated bracket.
