Possible Tiebreaker Game Set for Monday, October 3 at Busch Stadium
ST. LOUIS, Mo., September 29, 2016 – In the event the Cardinals finish the 2016 regular season tied with either the New York Mets or San Francisco Giants for the second National League Wild Card spot, a tiebreaker game will be held at Busch Stadium on Monday, October 3.
Tiebreaker game tickets start at just $5 each and will go on sale Friday, September 30 at noon CT. Tickets will be available at cardinals.com, via phone at 314.345.9000, and at the Busch Stadium ticket windows on 8th Street.
The winner of the tiebreaking game—which is considered a regular season game and not part of the MLB Postseason—will advance to the National League Wild Card Game on Wednesday, October 5.
Currently, game time is yet to be determined. Gates will open one and a half hours prior to first pitch. The game will be broadcast on ESPN, 1120 KMOX and on many of the Cardinals Radio Network affiliates.
The Cardinals will have home-field advantage for the tiebreaker against either team by virtue of their head-to-head record against the Giants (4-3) and, because the Cardinals split their season series against the Mets (3-3), their higher win percentage in intradivision games.
If played, this would be the second tiebreaker scenario in Cardinals history. In 1946, the Cardinals and Brooklyn Dodgers finished with identical 96-58 records, setting up the first-ever best-of-three playoff series (which was used until divisional play in 1969). The Cardinals won the tiebreaker series and eventually went on to win the 1946 World Series. Monday’s potential game would be the first one-game tiebreaker in Cardinals franchise history.
