Exit Interview: Travis Tartamella

For the fourth straight year, we’re taking some time in that time between the end of the season and the winter meetings to discuss each player that made an appearance on the St. Louis roster this season.  Whether they played almost every day or never actually got into a game, they get covered in this series.  All stats are exclusively their time in St. Louis.   Just think of this as them stopping by Mike Matheny‘s office for a quick evaluation before heading home for the winter.

Player: Travis Tartamella

Season stats: 3 games, 2 PA, .500/.500/.500, 174 OPS+, 0.0 bWAR

Hero/Goat: None

Overall grade: D

Positives: Made the major leagues and got a hit, so he’ll always be a former major leaguer….had five doubles in 40 games in Memphis….sorry, folks, that’s about all I can come up with.

Negatives: Hit .203 in Memphis….the five doubles was the extent of his extra base hits in either level….was considered a glove man but allowed 12 of 17 runners to steal in AAA.

Overview: There’s really not much to say about Tartamella.  He was an organizational soldier (been in the system since 2009) who got a little bit of a reward when Cody Stanley got suspended for PED use.  It’s cool that he got his time in the bigs and great that he got a hit in one of his two AB, but that likely will be the career highlight for him.  Still, it’s nice to see these guys get a little recognition after putting in the long hours and hard work.  At least he beat Moonlight Graham and actually got to hit!

Outlook: The club released Tartamella off the 40-man after the season.  He might catch on somewhere else, the club might bring him back to backup in Memphis.  Whatever the case, it seems unlikely that he’ll surface again unless the situation winds up just right.  If that happens, the team that is bringing him up is probably in pretty dire straits.
