Intense Mover vs. Measured Masher

Meant to write this yesterday, but I never made it to the site, as life got in the way. Happens sometimes.

The other day, when a friend of mine used one of those services that allows you to bet on daily games for a small amount, he asked me for advice, as he’s done for his last few sessions. One of the first guys we agreed on was Carlos Martinez.

My choice of Carlos was for his stuff, for his movement, for his intensity. he always seems intense on the mound, sometimes too much so.

The other night he started out with too much intensity, and gave up runs early, before settling down. Still intense, but in a controlled way. As I understand it, he had relatives in the stand, so that may have contributed. Or it could it have be an eagerness to shut down a certain opponent.

The opponent was a single batter of our opponent, the Miami Marlins. The hitter being Giancarlo Stanton. Stanton who, to me anyways, seems pretty calm and measured in the batters box. He’s having a monster season, with 27 homers and 67 RBI’s already. Stanton is obviously a very intimidating opponent, and If were the pitcher, I’d be eager to shut him down in his first appearance so as to set the tone for the rest of the game.

It didn’t work out that way, of course. After getting the first two outs, Christian Yelich singled, and Stanton, calmly but purposefully strode to the plate. After working the count to 2-2, Stanton launched Carlos’ next pitch into the stands. After that, Carlos settled down as I mentioned above, giving up one more run the rest of the game.

The Cardinals rallied as the game went on, and won the game 4-3.

And my friend? He won that day, partly due to the fact that the rest of the day Carlos settled down and went went seven innings, walking only one and string out nine. The Cards controlled Stanton the rest of the way, (though they did admittedly intentionally walk him once, but otherwise he didn’t do anything in his other two at bats.)

As a follow up: The Cards faced Stanton again last night, and he homered again, and the Cards won again. As long as the Cards win each Marlins game, Stanton can homer all he wants. It is entertaining after all.

As always, thanks for reading.
