Cardinals Purchase Rookie Pitcher Tim Cooney

CATCHER CODY STANLEY OPTIONED TO MEMPHIS (AAA)

ST. LOUIS, Mo., April 30, 2015 – The St. Louis Cardinals announced prior to today’s game that rookie left-handed pitcher Tim Cooney has been purchased from Memphis (AAA) and that he will make his Major League debut by making the start in this afternoon’s series finale with Philadelphia.  The Cardinals also announced that they optioned catcher Cody Stanley to Memphis following last night’s win and that pitcher Adam Wainwright has been transferred from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list to make room on the team’s 40-man roster for Cooney’s addition.

Cooney, 24, was 2-1 with a 3.63 ERA in three starts (17.2 IP) for Memphis this season.  The 6-3, 195-pound lefty won 14 games for the Triple-A Redbirds in 2014 while posting a 3.47 ERA in 26 games (25 starts).   He was the first Memphis pitcher to lead the Pacific Coast League in wins since St. Louis changed its AAA affiliation in 1998.

The Collegeville, Pa. native was a 3rd round (117th player overall) draft selection by the Cardinals in 2012 out of Wake Forest University.   Cooney has been assigned uniform no. 66.
