Cardinals Place Peter Bourjos on Paternity Leave

U.S. NAVAL ACADEMY GRADUATE Lt. MITCH HARRIS PURCHASED FROM MEMPHIS (AAA)

ST. LOUIS, Mo., April 21, 2015 – The St. Louis Cardinals announced prior to tonight’s game in Washington, D.C. that they have placed outfielder Peter Bourjos on the paternity leave list and purchased from Memphis (AAA) right-handed pitcher Mitch Harris, a graduate of the United States Naval Academy.   The team also announced that Memphis outfielder Gary Brown has been designated for assignment in order to make room for Harris’ addition to the 40-man Major League roster.

Harris, 29, a native of Ocala, Fla. will be making his Major League debut in his first game appearance, and he is believed to be the first U.S. Naval Academy graduate to appear in the majors since pitcher Nemo Gaines did so with the Washington Senators in 1921.

Harris was drafted by the Cardinals in the 13th round of the June, 2008 amateur draft, but due to his military service, did not begin his professional career until 2013.   Harris appeared in eight games for the Cardinals in spring training (0-0, 1.86 ERA in 9.2 IP).  The 6-4, 215-pound right-hander was 0-0, 2.45 ERA (3.2 IP) with two saves for Memphis in four games pitched this season.

Harris, who attained the rank of Lieutenant as a U.S. Navy officer, has been assigned uniform no. 40.
