Exit Interview: Jorge Rondon

The last couple of years, I spent the time immediately after the season examining each player that had made an appearance in St. Louis during the season.  This series was well received and so I’m bringing this idea back for the 2014 offseason.  More summaries than anything, I imagine the player coming into Mike Matheny‘s office and having a short conference before heading home for the winter.  Stats are just the ones accumulated for the Cardinals during the regular season.

This year’s Exit Interview series is brought to you by Cast.  Get instant feedback on whatever question you want to ask, whether it’s what’s going to happen in tonight’s game or which Muppet is the best.  Cast lets you ask anything that’s on your mind and quickly see what other folks are thinking as well.

Player: Jorge Rondon

Season stats: 0-0, 0.00 ERA, 1 game, 1 IP, 1 BB, 1.000 WHIP, — ERA+

Hero/Goat: None

Overall grade: C

Positives: Made his major league debut….put up a solid season in Memphis, with 10 saves and an ERA just over three….allowed only three home runs in 62.1 minor league innings.

Negatives: Only got into the one game in the big leagues, probably giving him a real good idea where he stood on the organizational ladder.

Overview: It’s possible that, a few years ago, Rondon could have made a huge impact with the Cardinal bullpen.  A guy with a strong arm and tolerable (though not impeccable) control would have been an amazing find about five or so years ago.  I mean, there IS a reason Maikel Cleto kept getting shots with the team.

However, nowadays guys that can throw 95+ are more the standard than the exception in the minor league system and there was nothing else that separated him from folks like Trevor Rosenthal or Carlos Martinez.  He was a good guy to have around for insurance, but the Cards really never needed to cash in that policy.

Outlook: He’ll get a shot with the Rockies, who always are looking for pitching help, after being picked up by them off waivers.  We’ll see if his power arm works in the thin air of Denver, but here’s hoping that it does.
