What’s in a Round?

High School players seemingly hold all the leverage when it comes to the draft process. Look no further than the 16th round pick for the Cardinals, who selected Tristan Hildebrandt from Esperanza High School. The SoCal native has a strong commitment to powerhouse Cal State Fullerton and also one very big dream. The story of [...]

Closing Time

St. Louis waited until the 15th round but took a college closer with impressive stats. Matt Ditman is a converted catcher with a fresh arm and should move quickly after taking over as Rice’s finisher this Spring.

JUCO Jumping

Adding a pair of JUCO standouts, the Cardinals also added another catcher to the mix. Chris Shaw may very well end up on the receiving end of throws from Matt Pearce but only if the price is right. Shaw has signed with the University of Oklahoma.

12th Round Review

Cardinals like the pickings in Florida this year, and they snag another lefty with video game stats. Jordan DeLorenzo absolutely dominated the competition for the University of West Florida and was ranked as the 313th best prospect by Baseball America.

11th Round Recap

St. Louis wasted no time in making a splash, snagging Justin Bellinger out of the New England area. He is committed to Duke and will be one to watch as the July deadline approaches. The Cardinals certainly could use another power bat, and Bellinger is a 6’6″ first baseman with plenty of pop.

100K Kids

While most will be watching Shelby time up North, I’ll be monitoring the action on Day 3 of the 2014 Draft. The most interesting aspect of Rounds 11-13 will be how the Cardinals look to step outside the comfort zone and take a chance on one or more of the players designated with signability issues.

CARDINALS DRAFT 7 PITCHERS, 3 INFIELDERS, 1 OUTFIELDER AND 1 CATCHER                 ST. LOUIS, Mo., June 6, 2014 – The St. Louis Cardinals selected seven pitchers, three infielders, an outfielder and a catcher after two days of the 2014 First-Year Player Draft.   The breakdown of the first 12 picks has the Cardinals drafting 10 college and [...]

Not much has been going right for the Cardinals this week. Rough starts from Wainwright and Garcia were punctuated by being shutout in two consecutive games by the Giants and the Royals. The third consecutive loss (at Kansas City, 8-7) was the second time the Cards had dropped three in a row in the last [...]

Waiting and Watching

It will take at best two years to see how the top end of the 2014 Draft pays off for the Cardinals. Even the most advanced picks will find the upper levels of the St. Louis system hard to reach but for eight more names, Memphis and Springfield will feel like the promise land. Rounds [...]
