Exit Interview: Brock Peterson

Last year, I spent the time immediately after the season examining each player that had made an appearance in St. Louis during the season.  This series was well received and so I’m bringing this idea back for the 2013 offseason.  More summaries than anything, I imagine the player coming into Mike Matheny‘s office and having a short conference before heading home for the winter.  Stats are just the ones accumulated for the Cardinals during the regular season.

This year’s Exit Interview series is brought to you by Bonfyre.  A large number of the United Cardinal Bloggers used Bonfyre all season long and found it a great way to interact and discuss things in a limited audience.  No need to worry about some pseudo-fan crashing your Facebook conversation or trying to explain fine points in 140 characters on Twitter. Invite who you want to the group and get to talking.  Share pictures as well–Bonfyre is a great way to document parties or other events, especially for folks that can’t be there.  Sign up today and give it a try.

Player: Brock Peterson

Season stats: 23 games, 28 PA, 2 RBI, 2 BB, 11 K, .077/.143/.077

Hero/Goat: None

Overall grade: D

Positives: Peterson was a great story, a guy that had knocked around both the minors and independent leagues before being called out of the blue by the Cardinals and eventually making the bigs with them.  Peterson had some prodigious power at Memphis, even participating in the AAA home run derby.  He got two major league hits, something that can never be taken from him.

Negatives: The idea when Peterson was brought up was that he’d provide some bench power from the right side.  Instead, he had no extra base hits at all and struck out close to half of the time.  If he’d brought a little more pop to the table, he’d have likely made the postseason roster, bumping off Edward Mujica.

Outlook: Peterson was released after the season and, given that the Cardinals brought him out of an extended period of unemployment, he might have trouble finding work in a MLB organization.  Then again, his power at Memphis well may entice someone to give him another shot, if nothing else as a warm body for their AAA squad.
