Exit Interview: Victor Marte

Last year, I spent the time immediately after the season examining each player that had made an appearance in St. Louis during the season.  This series was well received and so I’m bringing this idea back for the 2013 offseason.  More summaries than anything, I imagine the player coming into Mike Matheny‘s office and having a short conference before heading home for the winter.  Stats are just the ones accumulated for the Cardinals during the regular season.

This year’s Exit Interview series is brought to you by Bonfyre.  A large number of the United Cardinal Bloggers used Bonfyre all season long and found it a great way to interact and discuss things in a limited audience.  No need to worry about some pseudo-fan crashing your Facebook conversation or trying to explain fine points in 140 characters on Twitter. Invite who you want to the group and get to talking.  Share pictures as well–Bonfyre is a great way to document parties or other events, especially for folks that can’t be there.  Sign up today and give it a try.

Name: Victor Marte

Season stats: 0-1, 6.00 ERA, 4 games, 3 IP, 4 H, 3 BB, 2 K, 2.33 WHIP

Hero/Goat: None

Overall grade: D

Positives: Marte did have two scoreless outings out of his four appearances, which is something.  Both of them were against the Giants, though the second was a little dicier in that he allowed two hits in the inning.  Marte also absorbed some innings in Memphis as other people rode the shuttle, so you have to give him credit for that, I guess.

Negatives: His first appearance of the year came after Mitchell Boggs had blown a save and he allowed all three batters he faced to reach (one via error), including an RBI double by Eric Hosmer that eventually won the ballgame.  His last outing, he walked two and gave up a hit, effectively ending a game against Arizona that had gone to the the 14th.  There were a multitude of reasons why most of his season was spent in the land of the blues.

Outlook: Marte was released after the season.  I guess it’s likely he’ll wind up in someone’s minor league system, being an organizational body, but he is 33 and those chances are going to start being few and far between.
