Sowing Seeds: Getting Back to Normal

With major league baseball enjoying time off for the last time in 2013, minor league play stops for no one. Two Redbirds contributed last night in the AAA All-Star Game and both figure prominently in St. Louis plans going forward. A roster move or two is in the works for the Cardinals, and Michael Wacha as well as Brock Peterson could be making an appearance for the Birds on the Bat.

It is strictly unscientific at this point, but Wacha projects to be the odd man out of the spot-start game with Tyler Lyons, Carlos Martinez, and wildcard Chris Carpenter. With another reliever possibly being added and the club wanting to monitor the rookie’s innings, Wacha makes a solid choice for the bullpen. Peterson will need to be added to the 40-man in order to make his first big league appearance, but the power hitter offers an intriguing RH option off the bench.

Memphis recently lost C-Mart for at least one turn through the rotation, and he could end up sticking in the St. Louis bullpen as well. If the Redbirds wish to continue the six-man weave (check out Carp news below), look for Tim Cooney to get a strong look. Cooney has melted away the competition in July, currently 3-0 (19.1 IP, 16 H, 3 BB, 21 SO) after carving up Arkansas while showing no signs of slowing down.

Wednesday, July 17th

White smoke — Cooney, Springfield, 7 IP, 5 H, R, 6 SO, W

Gray smoke — Malik Collymore, GCL Cards, 0-3, 2 SO, 2 LOB (.188 OBP, 8 SO to start career)

Black smoke — Jordan Swagerty, Palm Beach, 1 IP, 3 H, 4 R, 3 BB (allowed 10 runs in 5 games)

Fozzie Bear smoke — Wacha, PCL All-Stars, 1.2 IP (All zeros to keep PCL in the game)

Everyone is back in play but updates on two players will lead the discussion this afternoon. Oscar Taveras has only appeared in one contest for the Gulf Coast League Cards, and word on Carpenter’s next outing should be coming down the pipe soon as well. I am quick but not usually keyed in to the point that C70 broke the news less than five minutes after I posted today’s story. Carp is heading to Memphis, which also keeps six starters on the books.
