Sowing Seeds: Moving Pieces Edition

It was an eventful weekend for the best system in baseball, and things are only going to get crazier this week. Rumors are abound about a change to the St. Louis roster, and all signs point to Brock Peterson getting his first at-bats as a major league player. Derrick Goold had plenty of info on his weekly chat, and the news should be final prior to tomorrow’s home contest with Houston.

While the news about Ty Wigginton should make many fans happy, I prefer to look at the players getting a chance moving up a level. Tyrell Jenkins landed on the disabled list, and that opens up a spot in the rotation for Hector Hernandez. To take his spot in Peoria, Chris Perry gets his first crack with a full season squad after looking impressive for State College.

Robert Stock also moved up a level, marking his return to the Florida State League as a pitcher. He closed out four games for the Chiefs and was replaced by another hard-throwing relief pitcher. Brady Adamek joins the Peoria staff and hopes to reach Palm Beach again this summer by dominating the Midwest League.

Saturday, July 6th

White smoke — Perry, State College, 6 IP, 6 H, 2 R, BB, WP, 5 SO

Gray smoke — Jenkins, Palm Beach, 0.0 IP, 1 H, Left due to injury

Black smoke — Anthony Garcia, Palm Beach, 0-6, 2 SO, 6 LOB

Sunday, July 7th

White smoke — Tyler Lyons, Memphis, 8 IP, 2 H, 3 R, BB, 9 SO (88 pitches)

Gray smoke — Mike O’Neill, Springfield, 0-5, 5 LOB

Black smoke — Richard Castillo, Springfield, 5 IP, 9 H, 7 R, 2 HBP, 1 Balk, 1 BB, L

The summer is in full swing already, and the All-Star break only makes the excitement greater. Lyons pitched lights out except for one pitch that went over the fence, and the Cardinals appear to have multiple options the next time a spot-starter is needed.
